Google and Blogger, at least when I got the warning yesterday, made my post into a draft after it received a DMCA take-down warning for this post (from the dimwitted IFPI who doesn't know how to get with the (online) times) instead of its usual ask-no-questions auto-delete methods. This is a welcome change, as a music/movie/media/pop culture blog, its nice to have some warning then to see a post get deleted. As you can see, I removed the infringing copyright material and still allowed the viewers (you guys!) to sample the music. Once September rolls around, I'm going to figure out how to integrate iTunes into this whole mess...

If this change is permanent, I welcome it (as it is about damn time!) as we know Google (for the most part) are forerunners for electronicrevolution...but not necessarily freedom...

Will Viral Video Kill the Music Video? That's what Business Week's Chris Albrecht asks when he examines the effects of how Viral Video (and marketing) has affected sales, customer opinion, and otherwise what used to be the dominant platform to introduce new artists, songs, and concepts.

Viral marketing, to sum it up, is finding a "text" to spread something via email, internet, social networking sites, and IM through a medium that is created with either the sole purpose to entertain or to push a product/service/idea/philosophy (or both). Both corporations, individuals, and unsuspecting victims of videos/images/audio clips have been both hugely successful....and downright sad and pathetic.

Essentially, he isn't too far off the mark - the reason why viral videos tend to be funny and remembered, and spread like wildfire, is that, well, they are original un-corporate videos that connect to regular viewers in a way that advertising never can. And with everyone trying to get their things to go "viral" (corporate buzzword anyone? Just "think outside the box" ;), its becoming increasingly clear how much of an influence the internet, bloggers, and those with too much time on their hands have changed the game to their fit, forcing corporations to MAYBE loosen their tight chastity belt on copyright claims and infringements...

“I want to come help you,” Artest said. “If I can, I’m going to find a way to come to LA and give you the help you need to win a title.”

It's been reported that Ron Artest is now signing on with the Lakers... If that's true, I guess Trevor Ariza's less than loyal move about not being paid enough stung with the Lakers' front office - more news as the story develops.

Looks like it was the LAKERS who did Ariza dirty - read this on ESPN - Apparently Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak told Lee (Ariza's agent) to shop around and come back to the Lakers, and then they will *perhaps* match their offer (like a Restricted Free Agent). Apparently Ariza was mad and then with Artest being signed...well, sorry to say - he should have gone to Cleveland.

Looks like its official - a 3-year, $18 million dollar deal for Ron Artest to come to the Lake Show. As ESPN puts it: 'In a text message to ESPN.com on Thursday night, Artest wrote: "I am happy to say I am goin' to L.A."'

When asked about the money (which is why he didn't sign with Houston again) he said:

"I've made money over my time in the NBA, I lost money when David Stern suspended me [in 2006 for his role in the infamous Pacers-Pistons brawl]," Artest told ESPN. "I'm not playing for the money anymore."

He apparently switched over to the Purple and Gold because he wanted to win a ring. However, what nags me (and I'm surprised there isn't even MORE fans with the same reaction), is that, DON'T WE HATE ARTEST IN LAKER TOWN??? Yes he's a great defensive player, and with maybe working with Kobe he could improve his shooting to a more consistent level, but I'm just wondering how much we lost out on the potential growth of Trevor Ariza - and how badly Ariza must be feeling now that he lost out on being with the Lakers again as a contender. As well, what could have been a bigger basketball rivalery coming next year (Artest Vs. Kobe, Bynum Vs. Howard, LeBron & Shaq vs. Lakers, etc...) has a huge change-up - and I can't help but wonder how much chemistry is going to be affected with Artest on the Lakers now.

I'm pretty sure that most of the Lakers team saw it as betrayal that Ariza didn't agree to sign up with the Lakers again - he could have said 'yes, I'm only sticking with Lakers but I want more money - or at least more increasing every year' - but instead he said "he was looking around." UMMM, HELLO??? The Lakers just won a championship, and 5.6$ million is nothing to sneeze at - Ariza could have done a two year, 3rd year option and with the economy probably picking up, and would have made it a good time to ask for a huge bonus, with the Lakers happily obliging (especially if they win a few more).

When Ariza was asked about how much he wanted to be a Laker, his agent (David Lee, that dumbass) said, '"If you cut him, he bleeds purple and gold," Lee said. "The issue is whether the Lakers want to pay him."'

I think getting an extra $2.6 million (from about 3.1$ million to 5.7 (give or take)) is nothing to sneeze at, especially since you only had one break-through year... And as Lee puts it, 'Ariza already has firm offers from several other teams, according to Lee, and will begin speaking with opposing coaches today. Asked if he could envision Ariza accepting a deal from another team without speaking to the Lakers again, Lee said, "Yes, we have no choice. That's the position they've put us in."'

All I can say is... wow. As reported by ESPN, Ariza agreed to a 5 year, $33 million dollar deal - just about 6.5$ million a year, about $450,000 more per year to play with Houston. Did he really make a smart move? I'm pretty sure Ariza's kicking himself in the foot right now when he screwed up his chance to win another ring...or be a starter. If I were him, I'd fire Lee and get myself a new damn agent.

Either way, have fun in Houston Ariza, with two injured all-stars and a lazy-ass town now with Artest gone. It was a good run, but once you turn your back, the city ain't got no love for you Ariza - just look at how Shaq turned out.

It has been reported that Michael Jackson passed away today at 3:15 pm, June 25th 2009. He died of cardiac arrest, as paramedics failed to get him breathing again at the scene and at the hospital. He was 50 years old.

Timeline of his death (sourced from LA Times):
Jackson was rushed to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center this afternoon by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics.
Fire Capt. Steve Ruda said paramedics responded to a call at Jackson's home at 12:26 p.m. He was not breathing when they arrived. The paramedics performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation and took him to the hospital, Ruda told The Times.

[Updated at 2:12 p.m.: Paramedics were called to a home in the 100 block of Carolwood Drive off Sunset Boulevard.
[Updated at 2:46 p.m.: Jackson is in a coma and his family is arriving at his bedside, a law enforcement source told The Times.
[Updated at 3:15 p.m.: Pop star Michael Jackson was pronounced dead by doctors this afternoon after arriving at a hospital in a deep coma, city and law enforcement sources told The Times.]

*UPDATE: Vince Carter heading to Magic; Courtney Lee, Rafar Alston, Tony Battie gone to Nets (I wonder why? Nets have approx. ~$29 million signed for 2010-2011... hellooooo free agents!)

Admist rumors that the Phoenix Suns were shopping their future hall-of-famer Shaquille O'Neal, there has been an announcement today that the Cleveland Cavaliers are going to pick up the 4x NBA champion, 3x Finals MVP All-Star for their upcoming campaign for the title in the 2009-2010 season.



This is a huge gamble, for both O'Neal's career and the Cavs, as O'Neal is reaching the end of his career (may have a few more years left) and is in need to post up some huge numbers in order to ride out his NBA life until retirement, as he has one year left on his contract and is looking to re-sign after the next season.


As for the Cavs, they risk disrupting their team flow, as LeBron James has yet to play with someone who likes to start the offense through him first, and takes up so much valuable paint space that James likes to invade. But, this can pay off in the long run as the Cavs have clearly shown they need a stronger presance in the paint (during their exit out of the Eastern Conference Finals to the Orlando Magic). This can also pay off, as a title next year will (most likely) guarantee James either staying through his contract or re-signing with the Cavs during the 2010 mega-free agent market. But, with so many potential contenders (Lakers, Celtics, Magic, Nuggets, Rockets (pending on Yao Ming's foot) and a handful of teams that can upset any of these teams), the Cavs may just lose out on James despite what happens...



For those who follow this blog, you know that I am a HUGE L.A. Lakers fan - and this could spell trouble (as well as most likely seeing a Lakers Vs. Cavs Christmas Day 2009 game) for the Lake Show and Kobe Bryant - but if Andrew Bynum, their budding center sticks true to his word about him and Dwight Howard working out together in the summer, O'Neal and James may actually be looking at a (few deadly) dagger(s) coming at them.



Plus, with Kevin Garnett and the Boston Celtics back in the picture and Howard viving for revenge, the Cavs better make some smart summer moves and secure some scorers on the wing...unlike Mo Williams who was supposed to be James's partner-in-crime but failed to show up.



We'll see what happens come fall of 2009 - its going to be an interesting season!

Hey guys,

I'm posting this as an effort to bring some awareness of the current issues with the RIAA, Universal, Sony, Warner, and Columbia - they just keep wanting to shut us down.

Today I had two seperate visits, one from the RIAA regarding the Clipse/Pharrell track, and one from Universal regarding the D.O.A. Kellz track from Trey Songz. What alarms me is that both of these tracks were released online either through A) the artist themselves, or B) leaked INTENTIALLY to the source that did it (usually signed off by the Label & Artist as well!). What bothers me now is that buzz that usually builds from this, gets destroyed by the corporate machine... and with it fans become disgruntled and angry at the corporate fatheads...

What gives? Fans are your core money-making machine...find a way to embrace the internet. Or find a way to leak low-quality music, and charge via iTunes or the other services out there for higher-quality - CD-quality tracks. There's so many ways out there to work around this, and going after your fanbase with lawsuits is NOT the way to do it.

Which is why I'm glad Harvard is getting involved. The Harvard Law School took notice that their school was not targetted by the RIAA even once against its campaign to target STUDENTS (yes, students with none-to-little income) of illegal music sharing. They are creating a class-action lawsuit against the RIAA for $100-million settlement to "get back what they stole". Good news for us, bad news for the RIAA...I mean, who wants Harvard after your ass?

...hip-hop group Advance Patrol put up their newest album on popular bittorrent tracker The Pirate Bay to protest the recording industry in using their previous album as a front to charge the Pirate Bay owners.

“We never asked to be plaintiffs in this case,” explains Gonza from the group. “They used us as a weapon in a fight in which we don’t wish to participate. We refuse to be used in a war against our fans!”

It looks like Jay-Z's new album, Blueprint³, will be coming out on Sony/Roc Nation this upcoming Fall. After buying out his contract with Def Jam, the label household that's been pumping out 10 albums for Mr. S. Carter, he's been shopping around for a label that works.

"Well, whatever it is, it'll be Roc Nation. It's gonna be a partnership with someone," Jay-Z said earlier this year about his next album's label. It's no surprise that Sony seems to be the ones he's going to choose - his wifey Beyonce is on Sony, as well as long-acquainted producer Rick Rubin heading the label.

After Blueprint³, all future releases will be coming out on Warner Music Group (Atlantic Records). This is due to the allies Jay's got over there - long-time friends Chairman Lyor Cohen and Executive Vice President Kevin Liles, who both used to be at Def Jam in the heyday.

Now, about his album specifically - the rumor that there will be NO auto-tune - is true. Kanye West has announced, from his latest publicity tour for his latest book "Thank You and You're Welcome", that Jay-Z has asked to remove all auto-tune from his album.

This book promises nothing but "Kanye-isms"... great more ego-boosting stuff for 'Ye.

"We actually removed all the songs with Auto-Tune off of his album," so Kanye said. "To make the point that this is an anti-Auto-Tune album."

"It doesn't matter to me." Kanye elaborated [on] his statement, "It's music; it's just sonics. I like Auto-Tune so I do it, but you want the other thing - like you'll wear a suit to a wedding and gym shoes to a basketball game. I think it's a perfect moment for Jay to provide some gym shoes to a basketball game right now."

Which is good news - in a world where everything is "digitalized", and seems like every artist is jumping on to the auto-tune bandwagon, including the Loius Vuttion Don himself (808s & Heartbreak, anyone?)

What's best to hear is, Jay's taking his time to make his latest one of his best

"He's just been working on it, and it's gonna be amazing when he drops it. I think it's good he's taking his time to give people the best product possible and not being rushed by this fast-food, media-outlet, Internet, everything-is-getting-leaked, people-stealing your-songs-before-you-can-mix-them-and-put-them-online world we're living in right now."

Hopefully what Kanye says is true!

On another note - Timbaland is apparently mad at Jay - all his tracks he had completed for Jay-Z, were scrapped due to the auto-tune features in them. Who knows if he's going to re-do them or scrap 'em all together...

"Security around Tony Allen was increased Thursday at United Center after a Chicago man issued a death threat against the Boston Celtics guard, The Boston Globe and Yahoo! Sports reported on Thursday.

The Celtics and Bulls had extra security around their benches during Game 3 of the first-round playoff series to keep an eye on Allen. A source said the added security presence was a precautionary measure, according to the Globe.

Allen, who is from Chicago, played nine minutes on Thursday night and did not score in the team's 107-86 win against the Bulls.

Sources told the Globe that Allen has been receiving threats in Chicago for some time. Allen also was threatened prior to a March 17 game at Chicago. He didn't make that trip, however, because of a thumb injury.

"Is that what you're going to write about? Is that what you're going to write about?" Allen said when asked about the threats, then walked away, the Globe reported.

"It's a private team matter," Celtics president Rich Gotham told Yahoo! Sports. "It's just not something that we are going to talk about."

Celtics coach Doc Rivers told the Globe: "It's a team matter. We will keep it in house."

The NBA also declined comment to Yahoo! Sports."

Well, just cause they lost in game 3 doesn't mean this series is over (currently 2 - 1 in Boston Celtics favor) - this series is bound to go to game 6 or 7 tipping to either team... let's see how it turns out!

I just read this on BBC - and it brings up an interesting point. Obama hasn't really been ripped to shreds - both in paper and in drawing due to his positive appeal to not only Americans but to the rest of the world.

"He's superman at the moment - young, black, good-looking, progressive," says British cartoonist Andy Davey.

With almost a 100 days passing since Obama came in to the White House, he's been portrayed as the Light in the coming Darkness, the hunter of bad policies, and even a tornado.

"Political cartooning is usually a negative art-form but with Obama there's a sense of hope," says Dr Benson.

In America, its almost the same feeling.

"Most of us are being taken in by his charm and charisma. It's difficult not to like him - he's competent, smart and it's such a relief after what went before," says Ted Rall, President of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists.

But among some, he says, it has almost become a "cult of personality."

For those who don't know, today is Earth Day! Celebrated every year on April 22nd, it can be traced back to 1970 when world leaders were discussing what to do with the overpopulation and its impact on the earth. Senator Nelson, pioneered this day and is celebrated (mostly) all around the World.

Take part in it, by turning off your computer, opening the blinds and using natural light, and enjoy the weather and what the outdoors has to offer today (plus don't forget to recycle!).

A Bathing Ape, high-end urbanwear by designer Tomoaki "Nigo" Nagaowill known for its zipper-up hoodies, bapestas retailing at 200$ USD +, and expensive accessories with unmatching exclusivity, will soon be opening up their Pirate Store on April 29th, 2009.

Just like buried treasure, it will feature old time-favorites, reprints, and extra runs that never finished selling. Bape will be featuring a special Pirate Store tee retailing at ¥3,990 (Approx. $41 USD) for men/women and a kid’s version for ¥3,150 (Approx. $32 USD).
